File 2: Ambrose Mason WWI service medals, trench art and wallet, 1915-1919

Mason family papers, photographs and realia concerning Ambrose Mason, 1888-1921

1. Star service medal and ribbon, 1914-15, issued to Ambrose Mason. Bronze, impressed on the reverse with the recipient’s details: '3402 / Pte. A. Mason / 1/BN.AIF.'

2. Victory Medal and ribbon "The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919", issued to Ambrose Mason . Bronze, impressed around the edge: '3402 Cpl A. Mason 1 BN AIF'.

3. British War Medal and ribbon, 1914-1918, issued to Ambrose Mason. Silver, impressed around the edge with the recipient’s details: '3402 Cpl A. Mason 1 BN AIF'.

4. Two cardboard boxes and original wrapping in which Ambrose’s Service Medals were posted to his father Mr. S. Mason, Crown Road Riverstone.

5. Female Relative Badge "Issued by the Dept of Defence. To Women of Australia. For duty done" [issued to Ambrose Mason’s mother, Mary Mason]. Sterling silver with blue enamelling [chipped] and pin fastening on the back.

6. Piece of trench art, white metal shield, approx. 55mm x 44mm, inscribed on the obverse: “1916 Laventie Fleurbeaux Somme Ypres” and on the reverse: “Cpl. A. Mason C Coy 1st Batt 7.10.16”. This medallion is one of two found in the wallet returned with Ambrose’s personal effects.

7. Piece of trench art, white metal shield, slightly convex, approx, 47mm x 35mm, inscribed on the obverse: “1916 Riverstone For Ever”. This medallion is the second of two found in the wallet returned with Ambrose’s personal effects.

8. Black waterproof wallet in which the two pieces of trench art were found, returned with Ambrose's personal effects.
