Notes: The back of the original stretcher bears a handwritten inscription that has been pasted on. It reads, ""Take notice that none are original pictures of Governor Macquarie but what has got the name of Read marked in Latin with the seal annext Governor Macquarie never sat to any artist in this colony but Read [Snr?] Lego [artist? v?] Sydney 1822 [red wax seal]"". Provenance of a portrait of Lachlan Macquarie by Read, dated 1822, is derived from a list of material that was deposited with the National Art Gallery (Art Gallery of N.S.W.), prior to the Mitchell Library's opening in 1910.
