William Joseph Castell was born in Kilkenny in 1789, son of Peter Castelli, a soldier and theatrical functionary, and his wife, Sophia, a singer and actress. He married Susannah Humble (nee Schliephaken) in 1810. He worked in London as a violinist, violist, double-bassist, pianist and organist. In 1826 he fled his creditors (which included the musi...
