Transferred from the Australian Museum in 1935. After it was sent to the Admiralty, the journal was appropriated by Sir Philip Stephens, Secretary to the Admiralty. Lieutenant James Cook was commissioned to command the bark Endeavour on 25 May 1768. He took charge on 27 May when his journal commences. The ship left England on 26 August 1768, and, sailing via Cape Horn, arrived at Matavai Bay, Tahiti, on 13 April 1769.
