Binding Information
Full bound in navy blue hard-grained morocco, five raised bands on the spine, with gilt inner dentelles and edges, and marble endpapers. Spine gilt stamped “Lettra Di A. Corsali 1516”. The text block consists of the original printed letter, 2 extra blank leaves bound in at the front and 48 extra blank leaves bound in behind the original letter. The edges of the text block appear to have been cropped. The binding is not contemporary with the item, but dates from between 1815 and 1835. Bound by Charles Lewis, bookbinder. NSL
Housed in a Solander box with gilt lettering and tooling, five raised bands on the spine, lined with blue velvet, probably contemporary with binding, spine labelled "Lettera di Corsali Florence 1516".

Biographical note
Andrea Corsali was born in 1487 in the village of Monteboro di Empoli, Republic of Florence, and his name appears on the baptismal register of the Cathedral of Florence. In 1515, when Corsali was 28, his patron Giuliano de Medici sent him on a mission to India. Corsali joined a Portuguese caravel in Lisbon, which sailed around the Cape of Good Hope...
