"Chart 2 'Carte réduite de l'Ocean Oriental depuis le Cap de Bonne Esperance, jusqu'au Japon ... 1753' is a most important and influential large chart of the Indian Ocean from Africa's Cape of Good Hope extending further east to Japan. It shows Terre Australe as far as the Gulf of Carpentaria (excepting Cape York and the east coast) and with an amended title, thus differing from chart 9 titled 'Carte réduite de l'Ocean Oriental depuis le Cap de Bonne Esperance, jusqu'au L'ilsle Formose' in the 1775 edition, which shows Western Australia only. Early Dutch discoveries in Australia are noted". -- Curators notes. "d'Après de Mannevillette was an experienced sailor and one of France's earliest and most influential hydrographers. He was the first to employ the method of measuring distances of the sun and moon to determine longitude. During a voyage to China in 1728 he succeeded in correcting the latitudes of many places using new instruments, and he devised a plan to correct and publish all the existing maps of the route to China - the Red Sea, the coasts of India, Malaya, the northern parts of Indonesia, Indochina and China. In 1762 he was appointed a director of the Dépot des cartes et plans de la navigation des Indes. English hydrographer Alexander Dalrymple contributed considerably to the 1775 folio edition." -- Curators notes.
