This edition is significant as the first to include new and substantial sections on Australia and the South Seas. Throughout, Malthus relies on the accounts of Cook, Vancouver and Bougainville, as well as David Collins' 'Account of the English colony in New South Wales'. "... This edition was so thoroughly revised by Malthus from the first octavo edition of 1798 that he held it to be a 'substantially new work' (DNB). Hence, it includes his serious attempt to understand how his theory worked in the light of recent information on Australia and the South Seas. The main interest to Australia is the ominously titled 'Of the checks to population in the lowest stage of human society'.
