Administrative / Biographical history

Albert Stewart McColl (1902-1933) was a mounted constable with the Central Australian and then the Northern Territory police. In 1933 he was stationed at Roper Bar. During a confrontation on Woodah Island on 1 August 1933, he encountered Dhakiyarr Wirrpanda (1900–1934), leader of the Dhayyi-speaking people of north-eastern Arnhem Land. McColl shot at him but the pistol misfired and Dhakiyarr threw a spear. McColl subsequently died 1 Aug 1933 and Dhakiyarr was sentenced to death for murder in Northern Territory Supreme Court. An appeal to the High Court of Australia was heard between 29 October and 8 November 1934. Walter Stewart McColl (d. 1977) was Albert's brother.
