Administrative / Biographical history

John Mathews Jefferson, 1859-1932, (grandfather of donor) set up a store at Fernshaw, Victoria, which was later expanded into a hotel and stood beside Watts River.
He had an almost life-long association with the timber trade. He was bom at Kyneton, in Victoria, and spent his early life in the timber trade in Tasmania, and later with the Kauri Timber Company In New Zealand. In 1899 he entered business on his own account in Sydney as a timber shipping agent. He was at one time a director of George Hudson, Ltd., timber merchants, and was one of the foundation directors of Cumberland Paper Mills. He died at Bellevue Hill, NSW
