Attributions / Conjectures

The handwriting bears a strong resemblance to that of Evans, who engaged in exploration of this part of New South Wales during 1811-1812.

Date note

The paper bears the watermark 1809 and reference to a perpetual calendar confirms the year of 1812. Evans describes such a journey in his memorial to Sir Thomas Brisbane in the Colonial Secretary's in-letters, Bundle 22, no. 54-89, p. 144, but gives the date as 1811.

Published information

`Evans's journal of the journey from Jarvis Bay to Appin, January - April 1912, edited with introduction by M. H. Ellis' and published in the Campbelltown and Airds Historical Society Journal 1, pp. 19-29, 1948.
