Thirteen black & white images taken during gay and lesbian rights marches in Sydney in 1978, comprising eight images of the march from Martin Place to Darlinghurst Police Station on 15 July, and five images of the march to Taylor Square and Hyde Park on 27 August.

CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION

Administrative / Biographical history

During Sydney’s first Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978, 53 people were arrested, with a further 7 arrests of protesters during court hearings on 26 June. On 15 July 1878, an estimated 2000 people took part in a protest march from Martin Place to Darlinghurst Police Station, demanding all charges be dropped. 14 people were arrested near Darlinghurst Police Station.
On 27 August 1978 protesters marched from Paddington Town Hall to Taylor Square and on to Hyde Part, where a Right to Life rally was taking place. Police arrested 73 people at Taylor Square and 31 at Hyde Park, following clashes between gay rights supporters and anti-abortionists.
