""The accompanying sketch was taken from the South Head road, looking towards the North Shore of the harbour. Nearly in the centre in the distance, may be seen St. James' Church; and towards the right, St. Mary's Cathedral ... Immediately behind St. Mary's are the buildings which compose the Hyde Park Barracks, the Hospitals and the Council Chambers; while extending towards the left are seen the houses which form Elizabeth-street. The row of lofty houses on the left, were lately built by Mr. Thomas Burdekin, and constitute the south-east boundary of Hyde Park, which extends from thence as far as St. James' Church, and is a fine and healthy place for the recreation and exercise of the inhabitants of Sydney. The building which occupies the centre of the foreground, is the Sydney College ... The foundation stone was laid in January, 1830, and when the building is completed according to the plans, it will be, doubtless, a great ornament to this part of the metropolis."" -- ""View of Sydney"", The New South Wales magazine, v.1, no.9., Sept. 1843, pp.485-6
