NOTES

General note

Digital order no:bcp_06453

The Bleriot XI monoplane is thought to be a stunt machine known as a “Looper” which was especially designed for aerial acrobatics and built at the Bleriot factory early in 1914. It was purchased by a professional stunt pilot, Maurice Guillaux (1883-1917).

In 1916, it was purchased by Ballarat garage proprietor, (Robert) Graham Carey. Carey opened a flying school and used the aircraft for numerous flying demonstrations around Victoria to raise money for the war effort. According to accounts in local newspapers, an aeroplane exhibition was held in Mathoura on Wednesday 12 September 1917, and after one flight the aeroplane propellor was damaged upon alighting.
