Notes: Some material transferred to MLDOC 935 In 1945 some papers relating to the early history of Australia were found stored together. The following note by a Mitchell staff member, Miss M. Flower was attached to them. Contents: Colonial Secretary's papers 1. Used by F.M Bladen in compiling HIstorical Records of New South Wales [many others were marked `King papers' and probably did not come from the Col. Secretary's Dept.] 2. A collection purchased by F. Weymark, Feb-May 1942, which at some time have been removed from the Colonial Secretary's Office. 3. A bundle from the Mitchell Library collection, stored in the Dixson Wing book stacks before the rest of the Colonial Secretary's manuscripts were packed away for security (miscellaneous papers not sorted into bundles and without labels). 4. A few miscellanous papers of official nature, source unknown which obviously, are of the same character as Groups 1-3. NOTE: According to instructions from the Mitchell Librarian, these parcels of papers can be stored together for the duration of the war, 13 March 1942. In 1958 the Archivist examined the papers and returned to the archives any with archival numbers. When sorting began in 1963, the papers consisted of 5 bundles and 1 volume. 1. Miscellaneous documents, 1803-1807 2. Papers relating to Captain Pipers' period of command at Norfolk Island, 1805-1809 3. Copies of various letters 4. Small bundle in brown paper labelled "...final?" documents to Col. Sec. P.G. King. This bundle contained copies of extracts to and from the N.S.W. Governor. 5. Bundle of miscellaneous material, 1800-1830 6. Volume containing manuscript copies of documents The 5 bundles form MLMSS 681. The volume containing manuscript copies of documents is filed separatly at MLMSS 155. In January 1954, a list of the King papers (probably in F.M. Bladen's handwriting) was found with correspondence from Mr Wright during his visit to Europe and America, 1913-14. This list includes other items from the King papers A1976-A1980, and among the papers in MLMSS 681. Other papers which obviously belonged to the King papers or were used by Bladen in compiling Historical Records of New South Wales are filed at various places in the Mitchell Library's collection. At some stage the collection was arranged into groups by subject and each document numbered in ink.
