James Hingston Tuckey (1776-1816) was born in County Cork, Ireland. He joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1793. In 1802 he was appointed first lieutenant on HMS Calcutta which went to Port Phillip to found a new colony. Tuckey surveyed Port Phillip and adjacent coasts.
