Administrative / Biographical history

John Skinner Prout (1805-1876), artist, was born in Plymouth, England in 1805. He arrived in Sydney with his wife and seven children on 14 December, 1840. He brought a lithographic printing press with him, and in early 1841 started producing lithographed versions of drawings he had completed of Sydney. In August 1842, the first part of Sydney Illustrated was printed, with descriptive letterpress by John Rae, followed by the second part in November 1842, and completed in 1844.
