Notes: Brierly can be seen standing by the main mast holding a pencil in his right hand and clutching a sketchbook under his left arm. There are two columns of numbers at the centre of the drawing. The sketch has pinpricks along the bow of the boat and throughout the drawing. Dated from the entry in Brierly's journal for 9 October 1849 (A 508) - 'worked up a sketch of our affair with the natives of Joannet Island in the Louisiade.' This drawing was previously ascribed to Thomas Henry Huxley but there is no evidence that he is the author of this work. A similar sketch, though of a different scale, is on reverse of "Ye natives finding ye Grapes are soure" (SV*/NG-E/4). Digital order no:a128902
