Administrative / Biographical history

Lachlan Macquarie, 1762-1824, was born on Ulva in the Scottish Hebrides. He joined the British army in 1776 and served in Canada, America and Jamaica. In 1787 he accepted the senior lieutenancy in the 77th Regiment and arrived in Bombay the following year. He remained there on and off until 1807 by which time he had achieved the rank of lieutenant...
