Formely titled, "Sydney in the forties".
On the back of the housing for this drawing is a typed note that contains information prepared for the Sesqui-Centenary Exhibition in the Public Library of N.S.W. It reads: "Sydney in the early forties. No.80 probably taken from the vicinity of St Philip's Church looking across to the Government House stables, old Government House and Bent Street with the Spire of St James' Church showing on the right. No.81 probably taken from above both these views is slightly misleading. Original watercolours by Joseph Fowles, who arrived in the Colony in 1845 and died here in 1878. He lived at Forest Lodge. He is best known by his book Sydney in 1848, published in parts in 1848-9."
