The sustained economic growth of the 1860s and 1870s culminated in the prosperity and building boom of the 1880s. Elegant arcades such as the Royal and the Sydney (1881) designed by Thomas Rowe, maximised the street frontage available for retail purposes in a city where business space was reaching a premium. Between 1881-1892 over 6 arcades were built in Sydney.
