Administrative / Biographical history
This plate was probably produced as a planned inclusion in the atlas ‘Historique’ of the Freycinet voyage (published 1825) and due to the lack of any captions may be said to represent an abandoned proof or trial printing. The plate is based on an original watercolour attributed to Antoine Marchais (fl. 1820s) after Nicolas-Martin Petit. Marchais worked on scenes relating to the Baudin voyage in the 1820s, whilst simultaneously working on newer plates relating to the Freycinet voyage.
