Administrative / Biographical history
Ezra Norton (1897-1967), newspaper proprietor. He established the Trocadero nightclub in George Street in 1936, and was Managing Director of the Trocadero Building and Investment Company Pty. On 11 June 1953, Norton had married Emma Georgina ('Peggy') Morrison, his 38-year-old secretary. They lived at Carmel, Albert Street, Woollahra. Having sold Carmel, he built a house at Vaucluse, with an Olympic-sized, salt-water swimming-pool.
The Trocadero Ballroom opened on 3 April 1936, on the western side of George Street, south of Bathurst Street. It was designed by the architects Robertson and Marks, in the Art Deco style, and operated as a site of dances, charity functions, debutante balls, receptions, gala parties, radio broadcasts and pageants until 1970. The entrepreneur Jim Bendrodt, who oversaw its creation, advertised it as a 'large Palais /Restaurant'. It closed on 5 February 1971, and was eventually demolished to make way for the new Hoyts Theatre complex.
