CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION

Administrative / Biographical history

Sir Thomas Brisbane, who was appointed Governor of N.S.W. in 1821, built an observatory at Parramatta, N.S.W. and made the first observations of the stars in the southern hemisphere since Lacaille's in 1751-1752. Much of this work was done by his two assistants Rumker and Dunlop. Brisbane left his instruments and scientific library to the colony.
