Administrative / Biographical history

Frederick Bell and his brother Henry Wyatt Bell inherited the 'Pickering' estate in Denman on the Upper Hunter, in 1883, from their father, Archibald Bell. Archibald had been given land by the Crown in recognition for discovering a route across the Blue Mountains. He acquired more land when exploring tributaries of the Hunter River and later purchased the Pickering property in 1859.

Frederick Bell carried on his father's work with Shorthorn cattle and developed the Pickering pure-bred stud. Frederick had seven children including three sons: Douglas Mackenzie, Roy Mackenzie and Frederick Bell.

Other business interests included the Noorindoo station, Queensland, purchased in 1873, and the Denman butter factory, established in 1907. Directors of the butter factory included E.R. White (chairman), Harold White, Henry Bell and Douglas Bell.
