W. Moore in 'The story of Australian art', Sydney, 1934 states that two paintings by R. Read in the National Library are the originals from which the aquatint was made (see copies at PXn 599). The same view however, two watercolours forming a panorama attributed to Richard Read Senior, is held at DG XV1/23 and DG XV1/24. These are titled on mounts 'Sydney from Dawes Point West View 1821' and 'Dawes Battery 1821'. The main difference is that the group next to Campbell's store is shown in the watercolour (DG XV1/23) as three Maoris in feather cloaks. Another two watercolours at V1/1820/3 and V1/c.1829/4 of the same view were acquired by the library in 1979. They do not appear to be a pair as the frame lines and scale differ, V1/1820/3 is signed and dated 'R.Read Senr 1820' and is titled, while V1/c.1829/4 is unsigned, undated and untitled.
