The collection consists mainly of letters from John Roper to his family in England and his brothers in Australia. In one letter, 18 August 1846, he gives some impressions of the Port Essington expedition and criticizes Leichhardt for failing to share the profits

John Roper came to Australia in 1843 and in 1844 joined Leichhardt's expedition to Port Essington. He later managed a general store at Albury. His brothers, Walter and William, migrated in 1852
