CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION

Administrative / Biographical history

William Paterson arrived in Sydney in 1791 as a captain in the New South Wales Corps. He was gazetted lieutenant-colonel in 1798 and appointed lieutenant-governor of NSW in 1801. When a new settlement was founded at Port Dalrymple (Van Diemen's Land) in 1804 he was put in charge of it, remaining there until 1809 when he returned to Sydney. He left for England in 1810 but died at sea.
