Contents: Objects - 10.3 x 8.2 cm. image ; (loop, 1.2 cm.) - 1 black basalt ware medallion, with "self" frame, thumb scoop on reverse, and wire loop at centre top for hanging.

Notes: The portrait of Sir Joseph Banks was first modelled by John Flaxman Jnr. between 1775-1779. It is difficult to assign specific dates to the medallions as several issues were made over a period of time. However, the thumb scoops on the reverse of this medallion indicate that it is an earlier production than the flat-backed plaques. The date is derrived from information in W.G. Constable - John Flaxman 1755-1826. London, 1927. The medallion is similar to other portriat medallions of Sir Joseph Banksheld in the Mitchell Library (P*31, P*34, P*35, P*55, P*61) and Dixson Galleries collection (DL Pa 99 and DL Pa 100).
