Frederick D. McCarthy was employed by the Australian Museum, College Street, Sydney for 44 years and was Curator of the Anthropology Department from 1941-1964

In 1964 McCarthy left the Australian Museum and was appointed the Foundation Principal of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal studies, which he held until retirement in 1971
