Sydney Exposures exhibition caption: Bridging the gap, Sydney, August 1930 : Still supported by steel cables anchored to each side of the Harbour, the two halves of the Bridge almost touch. First closure of the 3 feet 6 inch (1 metre) gap that remained took place at 4.15pm on 19 August 1930, when the steel supporting cables were loosened. The gap re-opened as contraction took place in the cool night air, but further loosening at 10pm united the arches perfectly, much to the relief of the engineers.
