Letters received by James S. Hassall form the main body of letters in this volume and include letters received from the age of 14 when he was a student through to 1854 when he was at Berrima. Early correspondence includes letters received from his parents, brothers and sisters and cousins while he was a student. He later received letters from younger family members while they were students at The King's School, Parramatta, and at Mr Woolls' school at Parramatta. Later correspondence includes many letters received from family members, along with letters received from friends.

Correspondence, being mainly letters received by James S. Hassall during the period he lived at Berrima and including his move to Queensland in 1873. Correspondence includes letters received: from family concerning family and family business matters; from friends; letters concerning Hassall's work as chaplain of Berrima Gaol, mainly from family of inmates; and letters from parents of young ladies enrolled at a school for young ladies run by Hassall, ca. 1868-1872. Correspondents include Thomas Hassall, George Hassall, John Futter, Charles Betts, Frances Hassall, Anne Hassall, Marianne Hassall, John Oxley, Henry Lumsdaine, Ingram Loft, James Chisholm, William Cowper, George F. Includes letters received from family and friends; letters received concerning a school operated by James Hassall at Berrima; letters received concerning Hassall's work at Berrima Gaol; a report sent to Bishop Mathew Hale in Brisbane, 1880; a list of candidates for confirmation at St Matthews Church, Sherwood, Brisbane, 1897; and a printed order of service for the installation of William Webber as Bishop of Brisbane, 1885.

An undated letter from Robert Lethbridge King describes in some detail a fishing and camping trip at Port Stephens with King, four of his brothers and two others. The letter includes a sketch, 'Plan of the Fishing Ground Port Stephens' and descriptions of the waterways, fishing trips, and of Aboriginal women diving for lobsters.

Correspondence and papers, beings mainly manuscript papers.

Papers include: Thomas Hassall, sermons, 1825-1855, pp. 8096-8686. Sermons, originally in small notebooks, are bound into small volumes, being manuscript with annotations and corrections, and including on the first page the text of the sermon, as well as the name of the location or church and the date it was preached, eg. Bathurst 21/1/27, St Pauls 6/11/42, most sermons having been preached on more than one occasion.
