It’s being called a "1,000 year flood event" by scientists at the University of Wisconsin’s Space Science and Engineering Center. It's the type of disaster few people could ever really prepare for. In the months and weeks ahead the price tag of the damage will become apparent for millions of people across the state. But financial vulnerability is exposed not only during catastrophic events like Harvey, but often times in the unexpected turns of daily life. In 2015, 46 percent of Americans said that they did not have enough cash available to cover a $400 emergency, according to the Federal Reserve’s annual economic well being of U.S. households. Jonathan Morduch is a professor of public policy and economics at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. He is co-author of "The Financial Diaries: How American Families Cope in a World of Uncertainty," and after tracking 235 households for a year, he found that both their monthly income and monthly spending was highly volatile. This level of volatility leaves people exposed financially. Courtney Collins is lead reporter on KERA’s One Crisis Away project, which has tracked North Texans living on the financial edge for more than four years.Collins says it’s not about being rich or poor — it’s about the unexpected problems of daily life that can destroy families financially. In a Takeaway survey of 2,163 people conducted by Harris Insights and Analytics, only 10 percent of adults said feel they are very prepared for a natural disaster. John Gerzema, CEO of Harris Insights and Analytics, explains. [Video Omitted] Here are some key findings from The Takeaway-Harris Poll, which surveyed 2,163 American adults between August 29 and August 31, 2017. * Americans are split on whether they are prepared for a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Harvey. * 50 percent say they are very/somewhat prepared, while the other half say not at all/not too prepared. * Only 10 percent of adults feel they are very prepared for a natural disaster. * Those in the South are significantly more likely to say they’re prepared compared to any other region. * Older Americans are more likely to be prepared compared to their younger counterparts. Inversely, younger Americans are more likely to say they’re not prepared. * Thinking specifically of whether they’re prepared for a long-term power outage or other disaster that requires supplies, such as food and water, for three days, levels of preparedness jump to 57 percent (18 percent very prepared), with 41 percent unprepared. * Americans will most often turn to family and personal resources if a crisis like Hurricane Harvey were to strike them, rather than response programs. * 32 percent would depend on family first * 16 percent say insurance * 15 percent say a personal emergency fund * 14 percent disaster response programs * 10 percent community * 6 percent friends * 3 percent donations * 4 percent something else * A majority of adults have confidence in their community’s ability to handle a natural disaster like Hurricane Harvey. * 62 percent are very/somewhat confident (12 percent very); 38 percent are not at all/not very confident (11 percent not at all). * Those in the South are significantly more likely than any other region to say they’re very confident in their community’s ability to handle. * The desire to help is strong, though ability is lacking for some. * 44 percent say they plan on helping through donating money (38 percent) and/or providing assistance on the ground (10 percent). * Those in the South are significantly more likely than any other region to intend to provide ground support (14 percent). * Those with high household income levels are more likely to say they intend to donate money vs. lower income. * While 42 percent say they want to help, they just can’t afford to. * This is particularly true of younger generations (18-54 year olds vs. 55+) * Just 14 percent of adults say they don’t plan on helping in either manner. If Disaster Comes, Could You Weather the Storm?

SUNDAY 12|26 MUSEUMS, WITH SPACE FOR VISITORS If you don't plan an activity for your out-of-town visitors, you'll all just end up going to the movies and they could do that back home in Wichita or Winnemucca. But the crowds at the Museum of Modern Art will be murder, and admission for five costs $100. Still, there are plenty of museums where you won't be crammed ankle to neck. Last year the Neue Galerie, devoted to German and Austrian art, got fewer than 1,000 visitors the day after Christmas. The museum is at 1048 Fifth Avenue, at 86th Street, and open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today; it is showing ''Comic Grotesque,'' an exhibition of black humor and satire in German art from 1870 to 1940. (Children under 12 are not admitted.) Today is also a good time to head to El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue, at 104th Street, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), where the sprawling ''Retratos: 2,000 Years of Latin American Portraits'' is on display. The Museum of Sex (233 Fifth Avenue, at 27th Street, 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) is also doing historical recon with an exhibition of American pinup photography from 1860 to 1960, and it certainly won't be clogged with families. Or take your guests to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum (90 Orchard Street), so at least they'll stop making fun of your apartment. (Guided tours, with a limit of 15 people, run from 11:15 a.m. through 4:45 p.m.) DOING GATSBY A revival of A.R. Gurney's ''Golden Age'' opens today. In the play, first staged in 1981, a young striver seeks to wrest a secret chapter of ''The Great Gatsby'' from the woman who inspired the character Daisy. The chapter is thought to depict an intimate encounter between Daisy and Gatsby -- which would surely have made high school students more eager to read the book. To get his hands on the chapter, our detective engages in some seduction himself. Access Theater, 380 Broadway, just below Canal Street, TriBeCa; 8 p.m.; $18 to $32. (Through Jan. 8.) AIRPORT DVD RENTALS Heading home for the holidays? Nearly a quarter-century into their careers, these tattooed anarchist-idealists will be joined by less political but equally thrash-worthy bands, including Hatebreed and God Forbid. The lineup includes Candiria, which has recovered from a serious accident in 2002 in which the band's tour van was mowed down by a tractor-trailer. ONE MAN, TWO WOMEN Today, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater closes ''Themepark Superstar,'' a one-man show by John Flynn that recounts a torturous summer working at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. LOBSTER FACE Magdalena Gómez, a poet and radical playwright, has hit her Judy Blume phase. In her new play, ''Lobster Face (Or the Shame of Amanda Cockshutt),'' the title character takes us through the struggles of high school, which include combating an evil teacher and falling in love with a janitor. TUESDAY 12|28 DVD'S: WE COME WITH FRIENDS The bundling trend in DVD's reaches new peaks: the disaster flick ''The Day After Tomorrow'' (Fox, $34.78) is being shipped today with tempting companions in different variations: ''Independence Day,'' ''The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,'' ''Master and Commander'' and ''X2.'' ''DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story'' (Fox, $34.78) gets the same treatment, with ''Office Space,'' ''Stuck on You,'' ''Super Troopers'' and ''There's Something About Mary.'' THE CHILD'S TALE Mamillius, the child-prince of Bohemia, dies of grief in Act III of Shakespeare's ''Winter's Tale'' and never gets the chance to enjoy courtly dramas and deceptions. (At least he isn't abandoned in the desert, as other children are in the play.) ''Mamillius,'' an extreme adaptation by Sheldon Deckelbaum, takes on the tale from the befuddled child's perspective. ROBERT RYMAN EXPLAINS HIMSELF PaceWildenstein, one of the few galleries open this week, is showing an exhibition of Robert Ryman's new paintings. Mr. Ryman, now in his mid-70's, is still making his snowy, puffy pictures of accumulated whiteness, but these latest ones are distinguished by their dark backgrounds, which add contrast and drama. KUNG FU NEW YEAR'S You'll barely get outside before midnight; the first of three Bruce Lee-related films begins at 6 p.m. That would be ''Bruce Lee: Fist of the Unicorn'' (1972). At 8, ''Bruce Lee, We Miss You'' (1977), an action film about someone named Bruce Li who tries to find answers about Bruce Lee's death.
