Sir Samuel Griffith papers, 14 Jan. 1860 - Aug. 1915

The political papers mostly date from 1858-59 and include letters from Sir Henry Barkly, Sir George Bowen, Sir William Denison, Lord Derby, William Howitt and Charles Sturt. They deal with the political and economic position in the colonies;  appointments;  emigration;  exploration;  the separation of Moreton Bay from New South Wales;  the selection of the first Governor of Queensland;  and the controversy surrounding the visit to Britain of the Mayor of Melbourne. The literary papers cover a much longer period and include papers about Lytton's work on the life of the convict Thomas Wainewright, letters from the poet R.H. Horne;  and correspondence concerning copyright and the performance of Lytton's plays in Australia in 1866-70

Edward Bulwer Lytton - papers [M1177-1178], 1836-1876

A collection of printed reports  and other papers of the National Australasian Convention, 1891, incudes drafts, proofs and revised proofs of the Bill to constitute the Commonwealth of Australia. Includes extensive alterations and annotations by Sir S.W. Griffith and others.

Contains MS. poems, ca. 1852-1878, cuttings from his writings in the Ballarat Punch 1868-1869 and other Victorian papers 1877-1903, a copy of 'Essay on politics in verse' published at Ballarat 1867 and facsimiles of vol. 1, no. 2 and 8 of the Melbourne Advertiser, January 8, February 19, 1838
